Laying the Foundations

Architectural Surprises

A large chimney showing the possible remains of a bread oven was uncovered in the room at the heart of the Hall suggesting this was, in fact, the site of the original 17th century kitchen. Find out more here

Layers of History

The Hall is presented as a multi period house as it has interesting features from different centuries. Over a period of weeks, scalpels and solvents were used to scrape through centuries of paintwork. The team revealed enough patches of paint to determine decorative schemes as far back as the early 1600s. Find out more here

Finishing Touches

Once the paint was dry it was time for the final touches. The team consulted experts, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, to ensure that even the smallest details were accurate. Find out more here

Locally loved, nationally revered

The newly refurbished Forty Hall reopened on Saturday 30th June 2012 at a major two day public event. “The Housewarming” welcomed thousands of people through the doors, as tours of the Hall were offered, led by volunteers and staff dressed in Jacobean costume. Find out more here
