A new free exhibition of work that weaves together the hidden botanical, scientific and cultural threads running through Forty Hall & Estate goes on display in the new year courtesy of Enfield Council and Arts Council England.

Silken Cells by Rob Kesseler, the Chair in Arts, Design & Science at the University of the Arts London, goes on display on Saturday 11 January and runs until Sunday 30 March.

The parlour table will be transformed with a silk cloth printed with a microscopic enlargement of its threads embedded with images of pollen samples collected from plants in the gardens and parkland and tableware decorated with micro-patterns of wood sections collected from the Mulberry tree in the grounds of Forty Hall.

There will also be a selection of silk hangings, artefacts and micrographs installed in spaces around the Hall, transforming the period rooms to surprise and delight visitors.

Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure, Youth, and Localism, Cllr Bambos Charalambous, said: “This is a fantastic and thought provoking exhibition which we are incredibly fortunate to have at Forty Hall & Estate.

“It effortlessly links the disparate themes of Forty Hall & Estate into a colourful and stimulating visual phenomena which will delight both art enthusiasts and the general public.”

Rob Kesseler is a visual artist who has collaborated with botanical scientists and molecular biologists in an exploration of the living world at a microscopic level. The ceramic plates which are part of the Parlour exhibit have been kindly sponsored by Royal Doulton.

This exhibition is supported by Central Saint Martins, The University of the Arts London and The Royal Botanical Gardens Kew.
